Wealth in the Soil Project
Supporting Agriculture Businesses
WITS is a three-year project (June 2018 to July 2021), targeting 2159 primary & 9800 secondary beneficiaries in Bubi – wards 11 & 16: Goromonzi – wards 1,2, 4 & 16 and Umguza – wards 7,9,14 & 19. The project is promoting sustainable food production, livelihood opportunities mainstreaming gender equality and social inclusion. The project’s goal is to contribute to food, nutrition, and income security for the vulnerable households. It has three main outcome areas which are:1) Increased and sustained market led agricultural productivity; 2) Improved nutrition awareness, dietary diversity and dietary intake by households, and 3) Diversified livelihoods options.
This is being done through Farmer Market Schools training, monitoring, and maintaining; facilitating market led value chain engagement. The value chains include horticulture, poultry, goats and non-agriculture businesses. There is Entrepreneurship training to encourage agriculture and non-agriculture business enterprises development. To promote improved access to finance, the project is using the Village Savings and Loans Associations (VSLAs) as community-based methods of mobilising resources for investments in different livelihood initiatives.
